Part 1 - Self Acceptance Skills

Chapter 11 - DON'T LET 'SHOULDS' RULE YOUR LIFE

Should, should not, must, must not, have to, need to, ought to, ought not to, got to, can't, always, never — all are 'shoulds'. These shoulds talk about your standards, what you expect of yourself or of others.

This chapter and the next are about shoulds, This one is on how to:

Tell good shoulds from pressure shoulds

There are two kinds of shoulds - good shoulds and pressure shoulds. When you expect what you're likely to get, that's realistic and a good should. When you expect something you're not likely to get, that's unrealistic and a pressure should.

Good shoulds

'I should write a letter to my aunt for her birthday' gives you just the little prod you need to get going and you're pleased. That makes it a good should. You motivate yourself.

'I've got to get ready now to make my appointment on time' is a good should if it helps you to get ready.

'I should give myself more praise and encouragement' is likely to be a good should if you want more self confidence.

You can tell a good should because it's basically what you want, you're likely to do it and you don't put too much pressure on yourself.
