Part 1 - Self Acceptance Skills

Chapter 10 - ACCEPT YOURSELF WITH ALL YOUR CHARACTER TRAITS

'That's one of my good points', Viv said when praised for being reliable. We judge character traits good or bad, strengths or weaknesses, faults or virtues. It's better if you don't judge traits.

Keep out of the Rating Trap

Viv is generally reliable but sometimes forgets. A character trait is a person's tendency to act in a certain way a lot of the time but not always.

People say 'I have this terrible fault and I hate myself for it'. They take one of their traits and judge their whole self by it. They turn the trait into a label and rate their worth with it - they're on the Scales of Worth and in the Rating Trap!

Traits like 'kind and considerate' cannot turn you into a better person and 'selfish and inconsiderate' cannot make you lose worth. A character trait is not a label, it's the way you mostly tend to behave and there are times when you don't behave that way.

Keep out of the Rating Trap - don't judge your trait!

It's how the trait fits that matters

Tim's first job was to visit architects to find out what fittings they wanted. Then he came back and did his calculations. Measurements and costing had to be worked out to the last detail. Detail was certainly not Tim's style; his style was the grand overview, which was not needed. Often when he worked out his sums he got them wrong — and got into trouble.

Then he took a new job as a consultant. He was trained to give management advice; his services were hired out by the day and cost a great deal. In his new occupation his strength was his grand overview style. If he had spent his time on detailed calculations he would have got the sack!
